BIRM® (Burgess Iron Removal Media) is a high-performance catalytic filtration media specifically designed for the efficient removal of dissolved iron and manganese from groundwater. It acts as an insoluble catalyst, accelerating the oxidation of dissolved iron and manganese into solid particles that are easily trapped and removed by the filter bed.

BIRM® requires dissolved oxygen in the incoming water for effective operation and does not require chemical regeneration, making it an economical and environmentally friendly solution for residential, commercial, and industrial water treatment systems.

Working Principle

  1. Raw water containing dissolved iron and manganese enters the filter vessel filled with BIRM® media.
  2. Dissolved oxygen in the water reacts with the catalytic surface of the media, oxidizing soluble iron and manganese into insoluble particles.
  3. The oxidized particles are captured within the filter bed as water flows through the media.
  4. Clean, iron-free and manganese-free water exits the filter for use or further treatment.
  5. Periodic backwashing removes the accumulated particles and restores the filtration efficiency of the media.

Operating Requirements

  • Requires adequate dissolved oxygen in the feed water.
  • Feed water pH should typically be 6.8 or higher for iron removal and 8.0 or higher for effective manganese removal.
  • Water should be free from oil, hydrogen sulfide, and excessive organic matter for optimum performance.
  • Regular backwashing is required to maintain filtration efficiency.
