Working Principle
- Raw water containing dissolved iron and manganese enters the filter vessel filled with BIRM® media.
- Dissolved oxygen in the water reacts with the catalytic surface of the media, oxidizing soluble iron and manganese into insoluble particles.
- The oxidized particles are captured within the filter bed as water flows through the media.
- Clean, iron-free and manganese-free water exits the filter for use or further treatment.
- Periodic backwashing removes the accumulated particles and restores the filtration efficiency of the media.
Operating Requirements
- Requires adequate dissolved oxygen in the feed water.
- Feed water pH should typically be 6.8 or higher for iron removal and 8.0 or higher for effective manganese removal.
- Water should be free from oil, hydrogen sulfide, and excessive organic matter for optimum performance.
